Copiague’s Aspiring Artists Present Portfolios

On Oct. 24, students from Mr. Rodrigues’ portfolio class at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School participated in National Portfolio Day at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.
Presented by the National Portfolio Day Association, the annual event provides advanced art students with a unique opportunity to present their portfolios in progress to representatives from some of the nation’s most prestigious colleges and art schools. During individual reviews, students received valuable feedback from admissions officers while discussing their creative processes, artistic growth and future goals.
The experience also gave students a firsthand look at the expectations of collegiate-level art programs and allowed them to make meaningful connections with college representatives. “Students get an opportunity to speak one on one with college admissions officers and defend their works,” said art teacher Mr. Rodrigues. “It’s an experience like no other.”
National Portfolio Day serves as an important step in the college preparation process for aspiring artists, helping students strengthen their portfolios while gaining insight into the opportunities available in higher education.
