About Us

The Copiague Public School District is composed of a multicultural population of approximately 4,500 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The school system consists of four elementary schools, one middle school for grades six through eight, and one high school for grades nine through twelve. Copiague Public School District prides itself on its ability to offer quality educational programs.

Within the culturally and ethnically diverse community that is Copiague, the public schools occupy a unique position. It is our responsibility, in partnership with parents and the community, to enable every student to reach high levels of individual academic achievement, to acquire the sophisticated skills necessary for life and work, and to become informed, concerned citizens of a rapidly changing, interdependent society.

District Priorities 2025-2026

Pre-K-12 Teaching and Learning

Universal Pre-K

  • Maximize the use of federal funding resources in light of increased funding.
  • Collaborate with Stanford Care and Marks of Excellence to strengthen the prekindergarten academic program.
  • Continue to provide professional development for the UPK teachers to align with our kindergarten academic programs.

Instruction: Elementary

  •  Analyze student data to monitor and support academic growth in literacy and mathematics.
  •  Provide professional development for all elementary teachers in the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System.
    • Monitor the implementation of the assessment.
  •  Strengthen K-6 instruction through continued use of Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading, Fountas and Pinnell Interactive Read Alouds, Fundations, Just Words, and iReady Reading Diagnostic Assessments.
  •  Work with the Director of Math to enhance mathematics instruction through continued implementation of the iReady Mathematics Program and small-group instruction aligned to student needs, according to iReady data.
  • Implement IMSE Morphology Plus for students in grades 4-6.
    • Train staff in the program.
    • Ensure the program is implemented with fidelity.
    • Monitor students’ growth.
  • Partner with new literacy support staff to ensure continuity of quality literacy instruction.
  • Continue to support the 6th grade literacy support class with most at risk students.
    • Monitor students’ progress to ensure they are making academic gains.
    • Adjust the program as needed to address student needs.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Special Education to ensure 8:1:1 students are appropriately placed and receive the support needed for academic growth

Instruction: Secondary

  • Advance the district's commitment to the NYSED Portrait of a Graduate by refining curriculum and integrating Personal Finance education into our core instructional program.  
  • Prepare for and lead the district's transition to the revised NYSED graduation requirements by expanding in-district opportunities for students to receive CTE graduation credentials. Prepare for and lead the district's transition to the revised NYSED graduation requirements by beginning the work of creating alternative assessments that are aligned to the NYSED Portrait of a Graduate. 
  • Implement a structured MTSS system of accountability into the intervention practices of Copiague Middle School. 
  •  Establish and operate a Business lab at Walter G. O'Connell Copiague High School to enhance inquiry-based learning, interdisciplinary instruction, and student engagement in Business pathways. 

Fiscal and Support Operations

Student Services

 

 

  • Collaborate with Western Suffolk BOCES to increase opportunities for students to earn technical endorsements and industry-recognized credentials that demonstrate career readiness and workforce preparedness upon graduation.
  • Continue to expand scholarship opportunities for graduating seniors through partnerships with local organizations, businesses, higher education institutions, and Copiague alumni.
  • Through NYSED approved Dual Enrollment Partnerships, continue to expand student participation in dual enrollment/early college so that we may support college success following graduation.
  • Work to identify, address, and remove barriers that impede student success by expanding access to academic supports, mental health resources, attendance interventions, and college and career readiness opportunities.
  • Continue to expand outreach efforts to ensure that all students and families are aware of and able to access available social-emotional, mental health, and wellness resources to include those offered through our partnership with Northwell Health, as well as through Hope for Youth.
  • Support students with disabilities in identifying and pursuing meaningful post-secondary pathways, including employment, vocational training, college, and community-based opportunities that align with their strengths, preferences, and interests.
  • Strengthen partnerships with outside agencies, community organizations, and donors to ensure the Eagles Nest Food Pantry continues to address the growing food insecurity needs of students and families within the community.
  • Optimize the District’s Virtual Home Instruction Program to deliver high-quality, engaging academics and comprehensive social-emotional support. Strategically assign dual-certified educators and build flexible teaching capacity, which will maximize instructional efficiency and reduce overall district expenditures.

Human Resources

  • Continue to recruit high-quality teachers and support staff to meet the needs of our evolving demographics and enrollment.
  • Negotiate successor agreements to the current Copiague Clerical Unit; Copiague Association of Principals and the Copiague Supervisory Association, respectively.
  • Encourage and support student observers and student teaching candidates to seek field-work experiences for CTE with the district.
  • Expand the exploration of digital storage options for newly hired instructional/non-instructional staff personnel folders to replace existing hardcopy, paper-heavy folders.

  • Safety/Security 
  • Implement new visitor management system.
  • Complete Rave Panic button integration into district-wide lockdown system.
  • Develop plan to update security system server infrastructure nearing end of lifecycle.   
  • Develop plan for additional security camera coverage in the new athletic complex, implementation upon completion of new bleachers/fieldhouse.
  • Schedule annual tabletop emergency response exercise with SCPD/Homeland security.

 

Parents and Community

  • Reach out to community and school groups to highlight district budget, programs and events.
  • Enhance relationships with State and Federal Legislators to advocate for the district needs.

 

Technology

  • Evaluate alternative student management systems that may have improved capabilities of tracking students MTSS and Graduation data.
  • Maintain a comprehensive cybersecurity awareness and training program that enables all staff to recognize threats, protect district data, and support a secure digital learning environment.
  • Monitor emerging cybersecurity threats, technologies and regulatory requirements to continuously strengthen the district’s security posture.
  • Maximize E-Rate funding opportunities to sustain and enhance the district’s network infrastructure ensuring a reliable and secure network.
  • Begin the process of establishing districtwide systems to accurately track student participation in CTE pathways and progress toward graduation credentials.
  • Continue to monitor the evolving artificial intelligence (AI) landscape and thoughtfully incorporate AI tools and practices into instruction where they are educationally appropriate, align with district goals, and provide clear value to teaching and learning.

 

Districtwide

  • Continue “Pizza & Conversation” with the Board and high school students.
  • Provide ongoing training for Ex-Officio Student Members of the Board of Education.
