About Us

The Copiague Public School District is composed of a multicultural population of approximately 4,500 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The school system consists of four elementary schools, one middle school for grades six through eight, and one high school for grades nine through twelve. Copiague Public School District prides itself on its ability to offer quality educational programs.

Within the culturally and ethnically diverse community that is Copiague, the public schools occupy a unique position. It is our responsibility, in partnership with parents and the community, to enable every student to reach high levels of individual academic achievement, to acquire the sophisticated skills necessary for life and work, and to become informed, concerned citizens of a rapidly changing, interdependent society.

District Priorities 2025-2026

Pre-K-12 Teaching and Learning

  • Advance the district's commitment to the NYSED Portrait of a Graduate by embedding its seven essential competencies into K-12 curriculum and instructional practices.

 

  • Prepare for and lead the district's transition to the revised NYSED graduation requirements by aligning curriculum, assessment practices, and student supports with the recommendations of the Blue-Ribbon Commission on Graduation Measures.

 

  • Establish and operationalize a STEM lab at Walter G. O'Connell Copiague High School to enhance inquiry-based learning, interdisciplinary instruction, and student engagement in STEM pathways.

 

  • Strengthen the district's professional growth program for probationary teachers by enhancing mentoring structures, aligning with CTLE and APPR expectations, and expanding access to differentiated learning opportunities.

 

  • Leverage instructional technology to support personalized learning, data-driven instruction, and equitable access to digital tools across all grade levels, with a focus on sustaining 1:1 initiatives and expanding digital fluency.

Technology

  • Update and implement our Cybersecurity Information Security Policies and Procedures.

 

  • Address the implications of Artificial Intelligence tools in instruction.

 

  • Revise and update the District Technology Plan to ensure it effectively supports current and future instructional and operational needs.

 

  • Improve district technology planning by establishing building-level technology committees to ensure broader stakeholder representation.

  • Provide additional professional development opportunities for staff to improve their effective use of instructional software

Student Services

 

  • Work to increase the number of students completing FAFSA applications in conjunction with the NYS FAFSA completion initiative.
  • Look to partner with outside agencies and donors to help the Eagles Food Pantry continue to help meet the growing food insecurity needs of community members.

 

  • Continue Copiague's partnership with Northwell Health and expand outreach to ensure all families are aware of resources available to them for social emotional support and mental health resources.
  • Continue to advance the district's Virtual Home Instruction Program, ensuring that our students participating receive a rich academic experience, while continuing to lower the overall cost of home instruction for the district, specifically looking for teachers that hold dual certifications and can fulfill multiple roles.
  • Continue to evaluate and increase opportunities for students to take part in career related activities, including expanded partnerships with local organizations; the Electrical Training Center of Copiague, and the Suffolk County Department of Labor.
  • Though partnerships with Hope for Youth and the Teen Intervene program work with students suspended for drugs or alcohol offenses to use restorative discipline to decrease lengths of suspension.

Safety/Security 

  • Update and ensure accuracy of room numbers being labeled on classroom doors and outside windows district wide.
  • Start process of integrating Rave app with the new lockdown blue light/PA system including push email notification.
  • Integrate staff ID photos into the new card reader access control program.
  • Conduct tabletop drill/emergency procedures with Suffolk County Police Department.
  • Continue hardening of all main entrances of buildings with addition of ballistic rated glass.
  • Add additional wayfinding signage to all buildings.

 

Parents and Community

  • Reach out to community and school groups to highlight district budget, programs and events.
  • Enhance relationships with State and Federal Legislators to advocate for the district needs.

 

Districtwide

  • Continue "Pizza & Conversation" with the Board and high school students.
  • Provide ongoing training for Ex-Officio Student Members of the Board of Education.
  • Plan and attend "Board Day at School”

 

 Human Resources 

  • Continue to seek out and hire high-quality teachers with appropriate multiple certifications using incentive methods, where possible.
  • Provide additional training and support for supervisors to enhance management skills of non-instructional staff.
  • Continue to support smooth leadership transitions and provide mentoring and career guidance.
  • Create a discussion group, comprised of district employees, to consider Staff Wellness Program opportunities.
  • Develop a web-based, paperless evaluation report program for all non-instructional staff members.

 

Fiscal and Support Operations

  • Assist transportation contractor with compliance efforts related to electric bus legislation.
  • Prepare and submit a Request for Proposal (RFP) for pupil transportation services for the school years 2026-2027 through 2030-2031.
  • Continue the expansion of the Farm to School Program to add nutritional value to student meals, generate additional NYS reimbursement for meals served, and support New York State commerce and agriculture.
  • Work with State Aid consultant to optimize revenue through the STAG process.
  • Review and update the District's Capital Improvement Plan in conjunction with the district architect.
