Two student leaders are taking on a new leadership role in their school community for the 2026-2027 as they were officially sworn in as ex-officio student members of the Board of Education.

During the Sept. 14 Board of Education meeting, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students Jai’den Pernell and Irie Waterbury took the oath of office and began their year of service, providing a valuable student perspective during Board discussions and helping to strengthen the connection between the student body and district leadership.

Jai’den, a junior, is vice president of DECA, vice president of Student Council, a member of the National Honor Society, Black History Club and Drama Club. A student-athlete, he is also a member of the football and lacrosse teams. Irie, a senior, is president of Student Council, vice president of Voice to Voice, president of the Fishing Club and a member of the World Language Honor Society.

As ex-officio student members, they will have the opportunity to attend Board meetings, learn more about the responsibilities of school governance and share the perspectives and experiences of their fellow students.

Their participation reflects the district’s commitment to giving students meaningful opportunities to develop leadership skills, engage in civic responsibilities and have a voice in their school community.
