Teachers, staff and Board of Education members in the Copiague School District gathered in the auditorium at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School on Sept. 1 for Superintendent’s Conference Day. The annual event brought together educators and staff from across the district for a day focused on professional development, collaboration and preparation for the 2026-27 school year.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon welcomed staff and shared her vision for the year ahead. “As we begin this new school year, I want to thank each of you for your passion, professionalism and unwavering support of our students,” Dr. Bannon said. “The work we do every day changes lives, often in ways you may never realize. I wish you a year filled with success, growth, collaboration and joy, and, most of all, meaningful moments that remind you why you chose your profession. As we move forward together, remember the principle that continues to guide our work: If it’s good for kids, it’s good.”

Board of Education President Brian J. Sales also addressed the staff, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and the district’s continued commitment to student success. He recognized the accomplishments of students and staff while highlighting the work ahead in areas including funding, technology, safety and security, facilities and support for students and families.

“As we begin a new school year, I want to recognize the dedication, talent and commitment of our students and staff, whose achievements reflect the strength of our entire school community,” Sales said. “Through collaboration, innovation and a shared commitment to excellence,” he said, “the district will continue navigating the challenges ahead while ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed. As we complete our new athletic complex and continue supporting students and families through initiatives such as our food pantry and food distributions, we remain focused on educating the whole child and building a district where every student can thrive.”

Following the opening program, staff members participated in professional development sessions designed to strengthen instructional practices, expand their professional knowledge and support student achievement. The day also provided opportunities for colleagues to connect, collaborate and prepare for the arrival of students.

Before returning to their respective buildings, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Todd Andrews presented service awards to staff members celebrating 20, 25, 30 and 40 years of service to the Copiague School District. The recognition celebrated the experience, dedication and lasting contributions of employees who have devoted decades to supporting Copiague students and families.
