Wiley Students Stitch Together Creativity And Confidence

Students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School are weaving together creativity, patience and new skills through the school’s Crochet and Knitting Club. The club, which consists primarily of fourth and fifth grade students, meets weekly to work on independent projects with guidance from advisor Ms. Soto.
Throughout the year, students have learned a variety of crochet and knitting techniques while creating their own scarves, bracelets, purses and clothing items. The club encourages students to express their creativity while also developing focus, perseverance and fine motor skills through hands-on learning.
Ms. Soto supports students during club meetings and beyond by uploading instructional videos to her Google Classroom page, allowing them to continue practicing and learning new techniques at home. The club, which has about 25 members, has quickly become a favorite activity for many students, giving them the opportunity to collaborate with peers while building confidence in their abilities and taking pride in their handmade creations.
