Seventeen Inductees Welcomed Into Science Honor Society

Seventeen new members were welcomed into the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School chapter of the Science National Honor Society during the school’s second induction ceremony held on Feb. 12.
Surrounded by family, friends, staff members, Board of Education members and central office administrators, the newly inducted students were formally welcomed into the chapter by advisors Dr. Kaitlyn Thompson and Ms. Julie Irizarry.
The Science National Honor Society recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in science, academic achievement, leadership and character. Membership reflects a commitment to scholarly pursuit and service within the school community.
The ceremony celebrated the hard work and dedication of the inductees and marked an important milestone in their academic journeys as they continue to strive for excellence in science and beyond.
“We are thrilled to welcome you into a community that celebrates curiosity, collaboration and the pursuit of knowledge,” said Ms. Irizarry said. “Tonight is both a celebration and a challenge. You are being recognized for your hard work, discipline and love of science, but membership in the Science National Honor Society also carries responsibility.”
Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Principal Joseph Agosta also addressed the students, emphasizing the importance of leadership and service. “You are now ambassadors of scientific thinking, ethical research and academic leadership,” he said. “You are called to serve, to mentor, to question boldly and to lead with integrity. Whether your future leads you to medicine, engineering, environmental science, research or fields yet to be discovered, your work will matter.”
Current members of the honor society spoke about the organization’s objectives as well as its initiatives and accomplishments from the past year. New members were then called forward individually to receive their certificates and candles before reciting the honor society pledge. Congratulations to the newest inductees: Katelyn Agtuca, Christie Arce, Bella Bartoli, Alexa Blanco, Jocelyne Carranza Orellana, Gregory Coy, Violet Feal, Laila Francis, Ronan Higgins, Veronica Karwowska, Laila Mederos, Andy Morales Sierra, Alicia Navarro Alas, Stephanie Rekas, Carissa Spencer, Alyson Vargas and Kasper Sztabinski.
