Copiague Launches Three Weeks Of Wonder Science Initiative

Copiague School District recently launched its Three Weeks of Wonder elementary science celebration, an engaging districtwide initiative designed to spark curiosity and excitement for science among elementary students.
The program provides students with an opportunity to explore the wonders of science through a structured, hands-on approach focused on physical, earth and living science concepts. Throughout the three-week celebration, students participated in discovery-based activities that encouraged active learning, creativity and scientific thinking.
The lessons and activities were developed by Copiague teachers and Leadership Academy Fellows Alison Silber and Jennifer Gordon, who created curriculum materials and organized supplies and instructional guidance for each elementary school with the support of the district’s elementary assistant principals.
As part of the celebration, students in the Teaching Academy collaborated with the Leadership class and their teacher, Colleen Gurtner, to assist kindergartners and first graders during culminating physical science activities held both in classrooms and outdoors on the field.
On May 28, kindergarten students explored the concept of pushes and pulls in motion through a series of engaging hands-on activities. They investigated how force affects movement by participating in toy car experiments and soccer-themed activities that demonstrated how pushes and pulls can change the speed and direction of objects.
