Fourth Graders Bring History To Life

Fourth grade students at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School recently brought history to life through a hands-on project connected to their study of New York State and the Native Americans who first settled in New York and on Long Island.
As part of the unit, students learned how Native American communities built longhouses using only the natural resources available in the surrounding area. To deepen their understanding, classes created their own longhouse models using materials found in nature, visualizing the structures that Native Americans once dwelled in.
Using sticks, twigs, leaves, grass, rocks, sand and other natural materials, students designed thoughtful and creative longhouses that reflected both their research and imagination. The project encouraged students to think critically about how early communities adapted to their environments while also applying creativity and problem-solving skills.
After completing their projects, all fourth grade classes participated in a gallery walk, giving students the opportunity to observe and appreciate their classmates’ work. The activity encouraged them to share ideas, celebrate creativity and gain a deeper appreciation for the Native American cultures they have been studying.
