Fifth Graders Explore Sustainability Practices

Fifth grade students at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School engaged in a series of hands-on research projects designed to deepen their understanding of environmental responsibility and sustainability during the month of April.
Students began their learning by creating interactive flip books that explored the history and significance of Earth Day, as well as the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling in everyday life. Building on this foundation, they participated in a research project examining how pencils are manufactured and the environmental impact associated with their production and use.
As part of the project, students researched specific pencil brands to better understand each company’s recycling practices and sustainability policies. This inquiry-based approach allowed fifth graders to make real-world connections and develop a greater awareness of how everyday items can affect the environment.
Using their findings, students designed and created awareness campaigns to educate others about the environmental impact of common school supplies and the importance of making sustainable choices. The project not only enhanced students’ research and critical thinking skills but also empowered them to become advocates for environmental stewardship.
