Copiague Students Explore Whitman’s World

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students from Ms. Kourtis’ Introduction to Poetry Writing and Intermediate Poetry Writing classes recently participated in a class trip to the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association, A New York State Historic Site, in Huntington Station. The visit provided students with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the life and legacy of one of America’s most influential poets.
During the trip, students toured the historic grounds and museum, gaining insight into Whitman’s early life and the experiences that shaped his writing. The visit deepened their understanding of his work and its lasting impact on American literature.
A highlight of the experience was a poetry workshop led by writer and Farmingdale State College professor Laurie Tozakis. Through guided exercises and discussion, students explored their own creative voices while learning new techniques to enhance their writing.
The trip offered an enriching extension of classroom learning, allowing students to connect literature with real-world experiences. By engaging directly with Whitman’s history and participating in a hands-on workshop, they left inspired and motivated to further develop their craft as writers.
