Great Neck Road Is Wild About Reading

Students and families at Great Neck Road Elementary School came together for a fun and engaging family literacy night on March 5, celebrating the joy of reading and the importance of literacy.
The evening’s theme, “Wild About Reading,” featured lively read-alouds of the popular children’s books “Giraffes Can’t Dance” by Giles Andreae and “The Great Kapok Tree” by Lynne Cherry. Students listened closely as the stories came to life, sparking conversations about confidence, kindness and caring for the environment.
Following the read-alouds, students participated in themed activities connected to the books. Families enjoyed interactive games such as HedBanz, joined in energetic freeze dances and created their own colorful bookmarks to take home. The hands-on activities helped reinforce the evening’s literacy themes while encouraging creativity and collaboration.
The evening provided a wonderful opportunity for students and their families to connect through reading while building excitement around books and storytelling. The event highlighted the school’s commitment to fostering a love of literacy and creating meaningful learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
