Second Graders Explore States Of Matter

Second graders in Ms. Barrett and Ms. Caputo’s class at Great Neck Road Elementary School have been diving into their science unit on states of matter and their unique properties. During a hands-on investigation, students observed and classified different materials based on what they could see and feel, then compared their findings with one another.
Working with partners and using magnifying glasses, students examined sand and discussed whether its properties made it a solid, liquid or gas. They also explored an inflated balloon and were challenged to determine whether it should be classified as a solid or a gas, sparking conversation and scientific reasoning. The activity encouraged second graders to observe closely, think critically and apply what they learned in a fun and engaging way.
