Fall Student-Athletes Honored In Copiague
To honor the accomplishments of its many student-athletes, Copiague School District held its annual Fall Sports Awards on Nov. 19 at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. Surrounded by central office administrators, Board of Education members, family, teammates and coaches, students were recognized for their many milestones both on and off the field.
Sponsored by the Booster Club, student-athletes in gymnastics, boys and girls soccer, field hockey, girls tennis, volleyball, boys and girls cross-country, game day cheerleading and football were honored for their dedication to their sport. Coaches called their teams to the podium to be honored and distributed individual awards, including the Coaches’ Award, Most Improved and the MVP Award, to worthy recipients.
Golden Eagle Awards were presented to those students with the highest GPA for the first quarter. Congratulations to the following athletes: Marie Andkerla Emmanuelle Pierre (gymnastics); Veronica Karwowska (girls tennis); Bielka Perez (girls soccer); Kerryann Allison (girls cross-country); Damaris Bonilla (field hockey); Bella Bartoli (volleyball); Andy Morales Sierra (boys soccer); Krzysztof Krasnowski (boys cross-country); Hailey Campisi (cheerleading); and Dae Jon Nation (football).
Six special memorial awards were given to outstanding athletes for demonstrating leadership on and off the field. Joshua Henry (boys cross-country) was presented with the Christopher Urban Award, and Kayla Cooper (gymnastics) was the recipient of the Dolores Sandefur Award. The Barbara Day Award was given to Damaris Bonilla (field hockey), and Heily Fernandez (volleyball) received the Debra Tekosky Award. Bielka Perez (girls soccer) was presented with the Michael S. Cohen Award, and Genevia Roberts (girls soccer) was the recipient of the Brittany Walsh Memorial Award.
