Copiague Middle School Scientists Conduct Hands-On Research

Copiague Middle School science students have been hard at work in May completing research that involve real-life scenarios.
Dr. Leccese’s classes are investigating solar panels and determining which type of light produces the most electricity. Using ultraviolet lights, heat lamps and LED lights, students used a multimeter to test how much voltage each type of light source generates on the solar panel.
Meanwhile, seventh graders in Ms. Gordon’s classes are studying genetically modified organisms. This process involves modifying an organism's genetic material to introduce specific traits or to enhance existing ones. GMOs are widely used in agriculture, pharmaceuticals and industrial processes. Students researched different foods and carefully read the ingredients on their nutrition labels to determine which contain GMOs and other bioengineered products.
