Students Explore Historic New York City Sites

Students in Ms. Stanton’s Advanced Placement Human Geography class at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School explored themes of urbanization, urban sprawl, importance of mass transit and infrastructure development with a visit to the historic restored Grand Central Station and a private viewing of the rare maps collection at the New York Public Library system.
Students viewed maps of Manhattan from the 1600s through today, providing insight to just how much has changed. Furthermore, the class experienced mass transit firsthand traveling to Manhattan using the new East Side Access tunnel connecting Long Island to Grand Central Madison.
The AP Human Geography course explores the patterns and processes shaping human interaction with the environment and how that in turn impacts civilization. It covers topics like population distribution, land use, urbanization, cultural landscapes, and economic development.
